Abstract

Analysis of Language Politeness in the Social Interaction of Adolescents in Rohe Hamlet. Undergraduate Thesis. Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Maumere, 2026.This study aims to describe the forms of politeness and impoliteness used by adolescents in their daily interactions in Rohe Hamlet, analyze them based on Geoffrey Leech’s politeness principles and Jonathan Culpeper’s impoliteness theory, and identify the factors influencing the use of language politeness in adolescent social interactions. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data consisted of spoken utterances produced by adolescents in their daily interactions, collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzedusing the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that adolescents in Rohe Hamlet use various forms of language politeness reflected in the application of six politeness maxims proposed by Geoffrey Leech, namely tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. In addition, forms of language impoliteness were also found. These forms of impoliteness were analyzed based on the impoliteness strategies proposed by Jonathan Culpeper. The factors influencing language politeness include family environment, peer interaction, emotional conditions, and the social environment.
