Directive Speech Acts, Traditional Markets, PragmaticsAbstract
This study aims to describe the forms of directive speech acts employed by traders in buying and selling interactions at Alok Market, Maumere, Sikka Regency. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was applied. The data consist of traders’ utterances containing directive speech acts, collected through observation, recording, listening, note-taking, and documentation. The researcher also acted as a participant to obtain natural and authentic data. Data analysis was conducted using a discourse analysis technique. The findings reveal six types of directive speech acts, namely requests, commands, suggestions, pleas, questions, and prohibitions. These utterances function as communication strategies to attract attention, influence buyers’ decisions, and facilitate transaction processes. The language used tends to be polite, persuasive, and contextually adapted to local cultural practices. In conclusion, directive speech acts play a crucial role in establishing effective communication between traders and buyers, while also supporting the continuity of economic activities in traditional market settings.
