Manortor is a cultural practice of the South Tapanuli community that functions not only as an artistic expression but also as a medium of cultural communication involving the use of language. Language is employed to convey respect, kinship greetings, advice, prayers, hopes, and social messages related to the implementation of customary traditions. This article aims to analyze the forms and functions of language use in manortor practices, as well as the relationship between language and movement, music, the Dalihan Na Tolu kinship system, and the cultural identity of the South Tapanuli community. The study adopts a qualitative approach with an integrative literature review design. Sources were thematically analyzed based on research on manortor, tortor, onang-onang, Dalihan Na Tolu, markobar, martahi, oral traditions, and the Mandailing–Angkola languages. The findings reveal five main functions of language within the manortor context: as a marker of kinship, a medium of respect, a channel for advice and hopes, a reinforcement of solidarity, and a builder of cultural identity. Onang-onang emerges as a crucial verbal form, integrating language, music, and movement to create multimodal communication. The study also shows that the meaning of language in manortor is highly dependent on social context and kinship relations. Therefore, preserving manortor must also involve safeguarding language, customary terms, kinship greetings, and onang-onang verses. Teaching tortor to younger generations should not only focus on mastering movements but also on understanding the language and cultural values underlying the practice.
