This review examined the current linguistic condition of Mandailing and synthesised recent evidence on its structural characteristics, intergenerational transmission, cultural functions, language shift, educational use, and digital revitalisation. An integrative literature review was conducted on 25 journal articles published between 2021 and 2025. The studies were selected through targeted searches of accessible journal portals and national indexing services using combinations of Mandailing language, regional language, language maintenance, language shift, revitalisation, education, digitalisation, and cultural heritage. Data were extracted into a thematic matrix and analysed through comparative thematic synthesis. The review found three principal patterns. First, Mandailing retained distinctive grammatical, morphological, semantic, phonetic, and discourse features, demonstrating substantial linguistic value for documentation and teaching. Second, language maintenance was weakened by intergenerational bilingualism, reduced use among younger speakers, and the expansion of Indonesian into educational and public domains. Third, revitalisation initiatives were most promising when they connected family transmission with culturally meaningful learning, community practices, curriculum support, and digital media. The review therefore argued that Mandailing revitalisation should not be limited to classroom instruction or documentation alone. A sustainable model should integrate household language policy, culturally grounded pedagogy, community participation, terminology development, digital archives, and youth-oriented media. The study contributed a consolidated framework linking linguistic documentation with social transmission and practical revitalisation
