The background of this research stems from students' low ability to interpret the content, meaning, and moral messages contained in narrative texts, particularly fairy tales. This study aims to analyze students' ability to understand fairy tale questions in Indonesian language learning at a public junior high school in Padangsidimpuan City. The research method used was a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design, namely collecting quantitative data through comprehension tests on 120 students, followed by interviews with teachers and students to gain a deeper understanding. The results showed that students' ability to understand fairy tale questions was in the moderate category, with the greatest difficulties in the inferential and evaluative aspects. Factors influencing these difficulties include low interest in reading, limited language proficiency, a lack of literacy-based learning strategies, and conventional teaching methods. The role of teachers in implementing contextual literacy learning strategies, such as story mapping, discussion of meaning, and retelling, has been proven to improve students' comprehension skills. This study recommends that Indonesian language learning emphasize strengthening reading literacy, integrating moral values in fairy tales, and using engaging digital media to improve students' comprehension of narrative texts.
